Russia: Big Feet & Broke Hard Drive!

Yes this is a real hard drive!
Hello,

We have been having a rough time with our new pictures from the trip. Last Friday, I was getting ready to remove them from the external drive to the main hard drive, then burn them to Cd's.

Then My big feet caught the USB line to the external hard drive and threw the drive to the floor. Needless to say it has not worked since I performed that amazing feat! (no pun intended)

Seems that I have crashed the arm thingy in the drive against the discs. We have an appointment with a man who works at IBM and has much knowledge about people with Big Feet and Delicate Hard Drives. :)

This really upset me tremendously and I have posted very few articles since it happened. (but I will wake up and post again)

We hope that we can get our pictures off this drive, we took something like 30 gigs of pictures on the trip. Lots of videos included.

Wednesday (tomorrow) we hope that we see some of our pictures.

I had software error (well, caused by power failure, but still software) with one of hard drives one year ago. It still works in a suspended state, waiting for me to recover files (it contains mostly archives).

I wish you recover files sooner!

Thanks Peter,

What hurts is that I have no backup. I was in the process of doing the back ups.

Oh my Big Feet..... :)

Most of the information should be intact. In the worst case I can imagine, only a little scratch may appear. So in a laboratory most of the information may be recovered routinely.

The only problem is to find a good enough lab and afford their price. Several years ago it costed me only a few roubles, tonow it may easily be 1000$, I don't know.

In Leningrad, it's http://q-lab.ru/ , I do know neither if there are better firms in Moscow, //nor their prices// (for worst cases, as I estimated, it is 20000-40000 r.).

Hey Peter,

Thanks for the information. My wife is taking the drive to a few places that she knows and see if we can get it done cheap enough,

You are correct that the cost is very high. We have to decide is it worth the money. We are finding out that $1000.00 is not uncommon price.

That is a lot of money for pictures! :)

Svet said we can go on the trip again for that cost...

That's a shame Kyle & Svet but unfortunately accidents do happen sometimes!

Hi, Naomi!

We'll still try to save the pictures. Tomorrow, our friend - an engineer of service who works with IBM Servers is going to unscrew this hard-drive at work. We will have more information then.
