Russia: Rules For The British Football Fans!

Hello,

Just saw this about rules for the Champions League in Moscow!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
UK fans warned against Moscow antics

Ahead of the all-English final of the football Champions League in Moscow on May 21, Britain's Foreign Office has published a set of guidelines for the 40,000 fans flocking to Moscow.

The guidelines show Chelsea and Man United supporters how to behave in a foreign country and draw a picture of a dangerous environment.

“Don’t smoke or drink in Red Square - it’s illegal and you will be arrested! Don’t commit acts of theft - the local authorities will lock you up rather than deport or fine you. Do not do drugs during your visit - the Russian authorities have zero tolerance towards drugs, both hard and soft. Penalties are severe and can result in long-term jail sentences,” say the guidelines.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

They forgot one rule:

Do not bring Ammunition for your hunting friends.......

At least the authorities have relaxed visa applications for travelling fans. Reports from the clubs suggest that they are having problems selling all the tickets because the travel and accommodation is too expensive. At least the Moscow militia will be saved some of the "mopping up" afterwards - English fans like to think they can drink more beer and vodka than anyone.

On a serious note though, there was quite serious trouble when England played Russia in the European qualifiers last year, when travelling fans were ambushed by combined Russian gangs - both on the street and on the metro. Hopefully we can avoid this this time round.

Hey Matt,

Thanks for the information.

I was wondering about the cost of everything due to inflation. If I was Moscow I would cut the Hotel rates and fill the place up. I know of reasonable Hotel rates in Moscow as long as you do not think that you need to stay in the Ritz.

Gotta have money for Beer & Vodka!

Moscow seems to have a large force of Police that patrols the Metro now. These last few weekends gave us an idea about how many available, They are putting about 9000 police on duty just for these events and I would think that they might have even more for this event.

I hope...

Thanks for stopping by with good information & I hope that Moscow has plans to keep things under control.

Demand and supply rules. There are no hotel spaces left (apparently). One or two companies are chartering the cruise boats (optimistically described as liners!) to moor on the Moskva river to house some - but only about 500 in each. Hotels can afford to put their prices up, and the charter air companies know that the scheduled flights are already hugely expensive.

Much as I love live sport, the £1500 (US$2900) it would cost to see the game, a beer and comfort of home is a much better investment!

Hey Matt,

$2900 dollars! I think that home looks really good at that price.

Will they show the game on TV?

Just a quick update - one Zenit fan stabbed (not critical) and up to 50 Glasgow Rangers fans arrested last night after the UEFA cup final in Manchester - a large scale "disturbance" according to the police.

Someone remarked last week on the irony of Zenit fans coming to the UK the week before 40000 English fans go to Russia and the potential for "revenge". Fortunately Zenit won, but it is a shame that few Russians will be able to distinguish between the Scots and the English (hugely important to us Brits, but not really to anyone else!)

Hey Matt,

That is a good thought and information. I was reading about the stabbing.

I hope that it is not taken as the need for revenge in Russia.

I would like to know the whole story, was the Zenit fan the one who started it or was it just a unlucky guy who was randomly attacked.

Never thought about it but you are right, Scots & English not the same..... does the English still consider the Scots as sort of an outsider still?

Thanks for stopping by.

Rangers fans definitely to blame here - there were approx 150 000 Rangers fans in Manchester, most in a park waiting to watch the game on a Giant Screen that broke just before kick off. Zenit fan was just in the wrong place at the wrong time I think.

Scots Vs English is an ancient story going back to Ceasar's invasion in 44BC I suspect. The English have virtually no opinion about the Scots (outside of sport), but there is a growing independence movement in Scotland. Unfortunately, historically the South (ie England) has been richer, better weather and without writing off the animosity as jealousy these things don't improve relations!

Trying to be neutral (hard for an Englishman) the Act of Union gave Scotland more than it gave England (yes, even including North Sea Oil) and now the Scottish Assembly (local parliament) receives more money per Scottish capita than the UK spends on the English. We pay more in tax, more for education, more for healthcare AND we don't have a national parliament, which means that Scottish members of the UK parliament can vote on matters that will only affect the English, but English MP's can't say anything about Scottish matters.

Hey Matt,

Sorry slow on getting back to you. Just been busy going to doctor and all. That is the best information about Brits and Scots that I have ever read. It does not make sense about the taxes and parliament issues.

Sounds like the Brits get the bad end of the deal.
