Russia: May 1st, The Day Of Spring & Labor!

Hello,

Russia has another Holiday. :)

The Day of Spring and Labor / Праздник Весны и Труда (day off)
May 1, 2008
Formerly International Worker's Solidarity Day under the old Communist system, it seems that everyone calls this one something different now. "Labor Day," "The May Holiday," and "Worker's Day" all seem to be used, but everyone at least uses the same date. It is celebrated with parades, concerts, food, and drink and traditionally kicks off the dacha season. The holiday will be officially observed from the first to the third of May, with official days off. The fourth of May will be a work day. This year the fourth of May falls on a Sunday.

Grumble! Grumble!

Con Artist All Over The World!

Hello,

This happens all the time in America it is not something that Elderly People anywhere in the world should have to deal with.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Moscow pensioner loses life savings in investment scam!

30/04/2008 12:49 MOSCOW, April 30 (RIA Novosti) - An 86-year-old Moscow woman was swindled out of $20,000 by two women who promised to invest the money in high interest government-bonds, a police source said Wednesday.

The two swindlers, who pretended to be social workers, visited the elderly woman's apartment Monday and persuaded the pensioner to hand over her life savings. With prices continuing to rise in Russia many pensioners struggle to afford basic goods on the average monthly pension of $150.

The elderly often fall victim to scams in the guise of social programs, including offers of cheap household appliances and other goods or the exchange of old bank notes for new ones, allegedly introduced as a result of some 'fictitious' money reform or re denomination.

In December 2007, a large pharmaceutical scam was exposed in Russia. Conmen persuaded Russian pensioners to buy a highly-effective anti-arthritis drug for 'a mere' 22,000 rubles ($930). The tablets turned out to be nothing more than vitamin pills.

Russian Visa: It Is Nice What Politicians Can Do When They Want Too!

Hello,

If you are British and a Soccer Fan you got it made. You still need a visa but it has become easy to get. The excerpt from the article: British fans require visas for Moscow Champions League final!
-------------------------------------------------------------------
However, fans holding valid tickets will not be required to go through the standard process of obtaining a visa invitation.

"Visas will be issued by the Russian Embassy in London on the production of a valid passport, completed application form and a copy of the match ticket," the ministry said.

Mayor Yury Luzhkov said on Tuesday that fans would only need their passports and tickets to pass Russian border control.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The reports in Moscow make it clear that this is one big event & all Hotels are reserved. One good thing about Moscow, people rent flat rooms all the time. Looks like a good time for Muscovites to make a little extra money.

Russia: Remember You Are The Guest!

Hello,

While drinking my morning cup of coffee, I found this fantastic article on traveling to other countries. So I thought I would link it & let you have a read. The article has lots of good points & issues that need to be listened to.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Embrace the American, Leave the Ugly at Home
When preparing for a vacation abroad, travelers will hear all kinds of contrasting advice about how to carry themselves in a foreign country.

On the one hand - When in Rome, do as the Romans do. On the other hand - Don't forget where you came from.

On the one hand - Be yourself. On the other hand - Blend in with the locals.

It's all pretty confusing; add to that the stigma of being the "typical tourist," and it only gets worse.

Culture Jamming
Some of the tourist stereotypes border on offensive - this type of tourist travels in large groups and takes lots of pictures and video. That type of tourist sits on buses and peers out the window waiting for the next buffet. This other type of tourist puts peanut butter on the scones. Another can't pronounce anything they see written down except brand names.

Americans traveling abroad have a particularly bad rap. They're loud, poorly dressed, and worst of all - obvious. The Ugly American.

There are reasons for the ubiquity of this stereotype. First off, there are a lot of us. And our extreme affluence relative to the bulk of the world's population means there are a lot of us traveling, a very expensive hobby without question.

And our Gap/Old Navy/catalog clothing culture tends to dictate that we dress alike, and sometimes colorfully; you don't find too much basic black at Old Navy.

So the French and the rest would rather we downplay our American-ness. But can anyone tell me why Mickey Mouse, Jerry Lewis, and Cher have done so well as exports? Certainly it's not their cross-cultural sensitivity, or their understated taste. It's their American-ness.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To read complete article follow the link below....
Independent Traveler.com

I will say that one of the most important things to remember is: "Use eyes and ears before engaging mouth.
Staying alert and attuned to everything going on around you is not only better style, but is much safer to boot. To paraphrase a very useful truism, better to be thought American than open your mouth and remove all doubt…"

Trips to the local markets are always an interesting & fun time. When they discover that you are American, the word goes like wild fire through the Market. (This is good & or bad!) We have refused to buy from many vendors because they raise the price, but in the same token we have gotten fantastic deals because they want to be the one to have sold to the American.

I am always one to remember prices & look for the best deal. Russia has a brand of socks that are made out of dog hair. These socks are the best socks that I have ever worn. My wife and I buy these socks from a local Babushka that sells them for 30 Rubles a pair. She makes good money and is very happy with the sales.

We went to a local market that sold clothing and found these same socks. The gentleman who wanted to sell us the socks (after he heard me speak English) presented us with a price tag (for the very same brand and style) of a 100 Rubles. Even with a 50 Ruble tag attached to the display socks. He was heart broken but lowered the price all the way to 60 Rubles. As we were walking away we heard 50 Rubles. We knew at this point we could have reached that 30 Ruble price, but we kept walking, for you see the Babushka will keep our sock business.

It is another fantastic day in Moscow....

Russia: Big Feet & Broke Hard Drive!

Yes this is a real hard drive!
Hello,

We have been having a rough time with our new pictures from the trip. Last Friday, I was getting ready to remove them from the external drive to the main hard drive, then burn them to Cd's.

Then My big feet caught the USB line to the external hard drive and threw the drive to the floor. Needless to say it has not worked since I performed that amazing feat! (no pun intended)

Seems that I have crashed the arm thingy in the drive against the discs. We have an appointment with a man who works at IBM and has much knowledge about people with Big Feet and Delicate Hard Drives. :)

This really upset me tremendously and I have posted very few articles since it happened. (but I will wake up and post again)

We hope that we can get our pictures off this drive, we took something like 30 gigs of pictures on the trip. Lots of videos included.

Wednesday (tomorrow) we hope that we see some of our pictures.

Russia: Does Georgia Really Want War?

Hello,

Seems that Georgia wants war with Russia. Might be the only way in their mind to get help from NATO.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Georgia is preparing for war against rebels: Russia
Tue Apr 29, 2008 6:37am EDT

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Georgia is preparing to invade its breakaway region of Abkhazia, Russia said on Tuesday, days after Moscow warned it would defend its Abkhaz allies if they came under attack.

"Analysis of the structure of the armed forces present in this region leads to the conclusion that a bridgehead is being prepared for the start of military operations against Abkhazia," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

It said Georgia had amassed 1,500 soldiers and police in the upper Kodori Gorge, a pocket of breakaway Abkhazia which is controlled by Tbilisi.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Does Georgia want war or is it just a President (Mikheil SAAKASHVILI) that is trying to convince Georgia that they want War?

Seems like the President of Georgia has some serious issues..........

   Russian News: April 29th, 2008!

RBC, 29.04.2008, Moscow 13:47:20.Sberbank's net profit under IFRS jumped 28.6 percent to RUB 106.5bn (approx. USD 4.51bn) in 2007 compared to the previous year, the bank indicated in its financial statement. Assets amounted to nearly RUB 4.929 trillion (approx. USD 208.86bn) as of January 1, 2008, which is 42.2 percent greater than the previous showing as of January 1, 2007. The bank's return on average assets (ROAA) stood at 2.5 percent.

RBC, 29.04.2008, Moscow 13:38:14.LUKoil's net profit under RAS grew nearly 70 percent to over RUB 13.231bn (approx. USD 561m) in the first quarter of 2008 compared to the same period a year earlier, the Russian oil producer said in a statement. Meanwhile, net profit slid 14.4 percent from just over RUB 15.45bn (approx. USD 655m) in Q4 2007, as gross profit fell, triggered by changes in the company's sales structure and higher export duties. Moreover, a negative revaluation of LUKoil's long-term financial investments in terms of stocks traded on the organized securities market has also had an impact on the company's profit.

RBC, 29.04.2008, Moscow 12:58:06.Raising the Central Bank discount rate by 0.25 percent will not have a considerable macroeconomic effect, head of the Russian Finance Ministry's financial policy department Alexei Savatyugin told a Standard&Poors' and VTB Bank seminar today, adding that hiking the rate by a quarter-percentage point was not that significant of an increase, and would play no major macroeconomic role. In the official's opinion, by upgrading the rate the Central Bank is confirming that it shares the Finance Ministry's concerns of an overheating economy and that all the monetary authorities have a common view of the macroeconomic situation in the country. Savatyugin also noted that the rate hike would send a signal to the market that the Bank of Russia was changing its trend and policy. He added that the decision would result in commercial banks raising their rates, as well.

RBC, 29.04.2008, Moscow 12:54:25.VTB's Chairman and CEO Andrei Kostin is wary of the consequences of the recent rise in the Central Bank's discount rate, he told journalists today. He said that he was disconcerted by the government's anti-inflation policy focusing only on the banking sector. The government needs to find other means of curbing inflation than putting restrictions on banking activities, Kostin noted. He pointed out that the hike in the discount rate could result in higher interest rates.

RBC, 29.04.2008, Moscow 12:21:59.At the opening of today's session on the Russian stock market, share prices remained virtually unchanged and showed no defined trend. After the first few minutes of trade on MICEX, LUKoil, RAO UES, and VTB dipped, while Gazprom, Sberbank, and Norilsk Nickel edged up. The RTS index opened in negative territory despite a slight rise in LUKoil, RAO UES, and Norilsk Nickel. Traders believe that the market will be stable today, while trading activity will be below average prior to the May holidays.

RBC, 29.04.2008, Moscow 11:59:22.Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Zhukov expects the State Duma to pass a number of draft laws in support of small businesses. Speaking during a meeting of a governmental commission for the development of small and medium businesses in Russia, Zhukov called on the deputies to pass the bills as soon as possible. Specifically, the documents include the terms of participation of small businesses in the privatization of leased state property. Furthermore, Zhukov pointed out that the Economy and Finance Ministries must present bills to the government on improving the taxation legislation for small businesses and facilitating their accounting procedures.

RBC, 29.04.2008, Moscow 10:23:40.At the opening of today's special dollar trading session for tomorrow deals, the weighted average exchange rate stood at 23.64 RUB/USD, RUB 0.04 higher than the official rate set by the Bank of Russia for April 29. The current developments on MICEX can be traced to the dollar's appreciation against the euro on international exchanges. The latter is now trading at USD 1.5637, down 0.13 percent from USD 1.5658 at the opening on Monday.

RBC, 29.04.2008, Moscow 09:26:41.Greece's Prime Minister Konstandinos Karamanlis will embark on a working visit to Moscow today at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin. He is expected to meet the Russian leader and President-elect Dmitry Medvedev in order to discuss an intergovernmental agreement on Greece's joining the South Stream gas pipeline project.

RBC, 28.04.2008, Kiev 15:35:21.Ukraine has fully repaid its debt for Russian natural gas, Ukraine's Prime Minister Yulia Timoshenko said during today's meeting of the Russia-Ukraine intergovernmental commission's economic cooperation committee. On April 23, Timoshenko noted that Ukraine had already earmarked the funds for the repayment of its gas debt to Russia and that it would settle the debt as soon as the two countries signed the required documents. According to Naftogaz of Ukraine's data, the company transferred over USD 1bn for this purpose during the past week.

RBC, 28.04.2008, Moscow 19:57:43.By 2020, Russia could face a staff deficit of between 8m and 22m people, according to various estimates, Deputy Health Minister Alexander Safonov told a round table on Russia's employment problems. He stressed that even now, the shortage was considerable, and was not only of a quantitative, but also a qualitative nature. The primary and manufacturing sectors are seeing a steep decline in staffing, while the accident rate continues to soar.

RBC, 28.04.2008, Moscow 18:28:04.Ukraine expects to sign a strategic agreement with Russia on natural gas supply and transit for ten years or more, the country's Prime Minister Yulia Timoshenko said following today's talks with her Russian counterpart Viktor Zubkov. The goal is stated in the minutes of the meeting of the two countries' economic cooperation committee, Timoshenko noted. Once existing gas problems have been settled, the two countries must develop strategic cooperation, she noted, adding that such an agreement would enable the parties to estimate the openness and transparency of their gas policy.

USA Has Rules On Firearms & Ammunition At The Border!

Hello,

Have a read about what you have to do to cross American borders with ammunition and firearms.
http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/vacation/kbyg/prohib

Firearms
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) regulates and restricts firearms and ammunition; and approves all import transactions involving weapons and ammunition. If you want to import or export weapons or ammunition, you must do so through a licensed importer, dealer, or manufacturer. Also, if the National Firearms Act prohibits certain weapons, ammunition, or similar devices from coming into the country, you will not be able to import them unless the ATF provides you with written authorization to do so.

You do not need an ATF permit if you can demonstrate that you are returning with the same firearms or ammunition that you took out of the United States. To prevent problems when returning, you should register your firearms and related equipment by taking them to any CBP office before you leave the United States. The CBP officer will register them on the same CBP Form-4457 used to register cameras or computers. (See the section on Register Items Before You Leave the United States).

For further information about importing weapons, contact the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, U.S. Department of Justice, Washington, DC 20226; or call (202) 927-8320; or ( Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives ) .

Many countries will not allow you to enter with a firearm even if you are only traveling through the country on the way to your final destination. If you plan to take your firearms or ammunition to another country, you should contact officials at that country’s embassy to learn about its regulations.

Russia: Items To Declare At Border, Weapon, including cold steel, ammunition and explosives!

Hello,

I was thinking this morning over a cup of coffee about what could Americans use for rules and regulations coming into Russia. I guess that you can use the source that I have used and crossed borders with. LINK....
http://www.sheremetyevo-airport.ru/?act=part&pid=512

I am printing this to help anyone else from having to go through what Pastor Phillip Miles has gone through. I am also printing this because many people have exclaimed that there are no rules for crossing the Russian Border and that Russian is not helpful to Americans with their English Language. So here you have in English on a Russian Website the Rules of Border crossing.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
BORDER CROSSING FORMALITIES

Admission of individuals, vehicles, cargo, goods and animals is carried out in checkpoints set by the Government of the Russian Federation. Admission is either acknowledgment of lawful arrival to Russia via the State border as well as import of cargo, goods and animals or permission to cross the border leaving the country as well as to export items mentioned above.
Legal foundations for admission are valid travel documents for individuals and appropriate documents for vehicles, cargo, goods and animals.
Basic elements of admission check are border guard/immigration, customs, health, phytosanitary and veterinary.

DOCUMENTS
The documents one needs to pass through border control normally are valid passport or equal travel document if accepted under international treaties, and Russian visa (for aliens only).
Alien and/or stateless persons are required to fill in a migration card.

* Citizens of Russia entering the country are to produce Russian passports. Still in case of loss or damage to the passport, other reliable proof of Russian citizenship is enough to enter.
* For Russian citizens under 14 to travel to some of the Commonwealth of Independent States countries, birth and citizenship certificates can be produced instead of passports.
* Russian minors under 18 years, leaving the Russian Federation and travel-ling without neither parents nor other wardship, are required to hold a parental authorization letter in the Russian language and notarized by a lawyer, stating that the minor is permitted to leave the Russian Federation.

MAKE IT EASIER
A simplified set of travel documents necessary to enter Russia may be stated by an international treaty. For example, most air companies crewmembers are not required to produce neither passport nor visa but for ICAO-established identities along with the flight's General Declaration.

BANS AND RESTRICTIONS
A right of some individuals to travel via Russian borders can be restricted in accordance with the legislation of the Russian Federation.
Aliens previously expelled from Russia for offences cannot enter the country since one year since the date of expulsion.
To travel abroad, a Russian citizen sentenced incapable by a court of law must be accompanied by a tutorial guardianship to provide security for both the incapable and people around.
Unadmissable foreigners are those forbidden to enter Russia in cases set by the law i.e.

* improper travel documents,
* AIDS/HIV-infection,
* convictions for felonies or misdemeanors,
* unlawful pursuits of entry,
* fraudulent presentation of personal or other travel information,
* security risk.

A person, no matter national, foreign or stateless, may occur a subject of restriction to leave Russia if appropriate legal grounds exist i.e.

* a citizen has been privy to the information constituting state secrets
* criminal or civil proceedings have been instituted against a person
* a person has received a court' sentence for having committed a crime
* a citizen has resorted to fraudulent representation
* a citizen is drafted to military service
* a person evades from the fulfillment of obligations imposed by a court of law.

Normally, the restrictions are active until the circumstances preventing the citizen's exit cease to be in effect.

WARNING:
Non-compliance with the entry or transit regulations may result in fines for both carrier and passenger and either deportation by same airline on first available flight or indefinite delay for passenger at point of entry. If carrier can prove that at boarding point passenger had proper documents to enter or to transit the territory of Russian Federation, the passenger may be fined.

Here is what the American Government says about breaking the law in Russia:
http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1006.html
CRIMINAL PENALTIES: While in a foreign country, a U.S. citizen is subject to that country's laws and regulations, which sometimes differ significantly from those in the United States and may not afford the protections available to the individual under U.S. law. Penalties for breaking the law can be more severe than in the United States for similar offenses. Persons violating Russian laws, even unknowingly, may be expelled, arrested or imprisoned. Penalties for possession, use, or trafficking in illegal drugs in Russia are severe, and convicted offenders can expect long jail sentences and heavy fines. Engaging in sexual conduct with children or using or disseminating child pornography in a foreign country is a crime, prosecutable in the United States.

So read and learn, crossing into another country is an experience that many Americans never understand. (Mexico & Canada not included!)

There is a saying in America, "Do not ASSUME, for .........."

   Ukraine: Boarder Crossing Was Smooth!

Hello,

We found Ukraine to be a pleasure to travel. As always the people of Ukraine are friendly and helpful if need be. I myself find Ukrainians to be a little more expressive than Russians.

The border crossing at Belgorod, Russia was smooth and very fast. The last time we crossed a year ago by car, it took us hours. This time it was minutes and painless. Seems that Russia and Ukraine have worked on their boarder policies & they are much better.

The thing about border crossings is to be honest. If they ask you do you have weapons, drugs or artifacts. Be honest and show them what you have, if in doubt. Do not cross green line* unless you are sure that you are safe. They will and do check your trunks & bags for any illegal items. I also let my Russian Wife do the talking. My command of the language is poor at best & would only hurt more than help to try to communicate.

*Red line & Green line: When crossing a border you have two options to cross. Red mean you have declarations for your protection and will be searched for any and all items. Green means you have no declarations and may or may not be searched. If green is declared do not get caught with unlawful items. (it means you lied)

   Russia: Easter - April 27, 2008

Hello,

My wife and I had an article before Easter in the West on March 23rd, 2008. I had an article then about the Russian Easter. I am now bringing it back up because guess what?

It is Easter in Russia this weekend!

The Article Here (LINK).
--------------------------------------------------------------

Russian Easter!

Easter in Russia is celebrated according to the rituals laid down by the Eastern Orthodox Church. Apart from differences in rites and rituals, the bone of contention between Western Christians (Protestants and Roman Catholics) and the Eastern Orthodox Christians is the date of Easter celebration. In determining the vernal equinox, the Eastern Church uses the Julian calendar while the Western Church employs the Gregorian calendar.

2008 date:
March 23 (Western)
April 27 (Eastern)

Moreover, whereas Western Churches hold Easter sunrise services, in Russian Orthodox Church Easter services last all through Saturday night. The congregation gathers in the church or cathedral on Saturday evening and takes part in an Easter vigil commemorating the buried Christ.

Easter service is also held in a different way. Already on a Saturday night people put on their best clothes and come together in dark churches that symbolize a gloomy world without the light of faith.

The holy week is pretty much busy in most Russian homes. Once a spring cleaning is done, it’s time for baking Easter bread. The eggs are painted on Holy ("Clean") Thursday and fresh Easter cakes (Paskha) are prepared on Saturday. It’s a tough time as Saturday is the strictest fasting day when orthodox Christians are almost not allowed to eat. Tasting food while cooking is also forbidden. But everyone is looking forward to the feast, and the cooks do their best. It is a tradition to bless Easter eggs and bread in the church. Fasting ends after the Easter Mass and feasting begins.

The Easter Day starts with a long family breakfast. The table is decorated with fresh flowers, pussy-willow branches and, of course, painted eggs. Besides Easter bread and Paskha that are only eaten on Easter, there is lots of other food on the table like sausages, bacon, cheese, milk, etc. – so basically everything that was prohibited during the Forty Day Fast. However, the feast starts with a piece of aromatic Easter bread.

Sharing food on Easter has been a long tradition in Russia. That is why after breakfast people visit their friends and neighbors exchanging eggs and small Easter breads. If the first egg you get on Easter is a truly gift given from the heart, it will never go bad, says an old Russian wisdom.

It is also common practice to visit cemeteries and bring eggs, some bread and beer to the graves. In doing so, people let deceased loved ones enjoy the feast.

Strangely enough the weather on the Easter Day is usually very nice and sunny. "The sun plays", say the Russians. It is an old custom to open the cages and let birds go free on Easter.

In the past, only men were allowed to ring church bells. Bell-ringing could be heard everywhere creating a joyful atmosphere. There was no Easter without swinging on a swing. It was great fun, especially for kids and girls.
-------------------------------------------------
It is still very popular to roll Easter eggs on the ground or down a hill. The aim of the game is to break the eggs of other players without damaging your own ones. Experienced players pay special attention to the form of the eggs and even make special gutters for the eggs to have a better roll. Farmers believe that rolling eggs keep the soil fertile.

Painted eggs are an international Easter symbol. In Russia Easter eggs are believed to possess magic powers. They are supposed to protect crops against hail damage, keep cattle healthy and ward off evil spirits. An Easter egg hidden in the foundation of a house would bring the owners happiness and prosperity. It should even be possible to make yourself look younger by rolling an Easter egg over the face. So it’s no wonder that painted and blessed Easter eggs used to be kept as lucky charms for a long time. One day someone started making and painting wooden eggs. Porcelain, golden, silver and gemstone eggs are very precious. The most exquisite ones are probably the Imperial Easter Eggs designed by the world-famous jeweler Peter Carl Fabergé's for the Russian Royal Family.

Traditional Easter eggs are red. Of course, it is also possible to use other colors. In Russia eggs are often cooked together with onion skins or wrapped in colorful fabric remnants. Spinach dyes eggs green and beet root gives them a red tint. Easter eggs get a nice shine if rubbed with vegetable oil.
-------------------------------------------------
At midnight ringing church bells announce the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Priests come to the altar holding a crucifix and candles. Solemnly singing, they walk through the church and then around it. Everyone lights the candles and follow the procession. Churches and cathedrals are now full of singing voices and candle lights.

The Orthodox liturgical chant substitutes a Catholic organ and creates a very special atmosphere. The Mass goes on till dawn. Today, the president and other politicians also attend the Easter Mass.

As there are no bench rows in orthodox churches, some people find it difficult to stand the whole mass that goes on for hours. But the impressive ceremony is worth every effort. The Easter service ends early in the morning when the priests go around the crucifix. Numerous church bells start ringing, the singing gets louder, and finally the priests tell everybody to forgive each other and seal it with a hug and a kiss. Everyone happily follows this appeal. The traditional Easter greeting can be heard everywhere: "Christ is risen!" and the answer: "He is truly risen!"
----------------------------------------------------------------

So everyone have a happy Easter and enjoy the Easter Eggs.

   Russian News: April 22nd, 2008!

RBC, 22.04.2008, Moscow 17:59:56.Head of the Russian air force, Colonel-General Alexander Zelin, today denied any links of the Russian military aviation to the shooting-down of an unmanned aircraft in Abkhazia's airspace. ''The Russian air force had nothing to do with it, we have absolutely no business on the territory where the incident took place,'' he told journalists.

RBC, 22.04.2008, Moscow 17:23:10.President of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs Alexander Shokhin told journalists today that a decision on a VAT rate change must be made as soon as possible. Tax decisions should be made before a long-term program (until 2020) is approved and a three-year budget is presented to the State Duma, Shokhin noted. He was wary that tax changes would not be reflected in the three-year budget and, as a result, would not be implemented until 2012.

RBC, 22.04.2008, Sochi 16:28:45.Russia's Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov assured the International Olympic Committee's Coordination Commission during today's meeting that Sochi would be fully prepared for the 2014 Olympic Games. The PM pointed out that a presidential council responsible for preparations for the Olympics had been set up and that its presidium maintained strict control over the preparations. Combined with Russia's economic and political stability, this gives confidence that an ultra-modern sports center, as well as an international resort will be built in Sochi, Zubkov noted.

RBC, 22.04.2008, Moscow 16:00:46.Less than an hour and a half before the close of today's special dollar trading session for tomorrow deals, the weighted average exchange rate stood at 23.39 RUB/USD, RUB 0.04 lower than the official rate set by the Bank of Russia for April 23. The current developments on MICEX can be attributed to the dollar's continuous decline against the euro on international exchanges. The latter is now trading at roughly USD 1.5940, up from around USD 1.5930 as of 3 p.m. Consequently, the European currency has advanced some 0.1 percent against the dollar on the global market over a short period.

RBC, 22.04.2008, Moscow 15:56:29.Russian President Vladimir Putin has invited the leaders of the CIS countries to participate in the 12th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum scheduled for June 6-8, the Russian President's press office reported today. Among the forum's main topics will be "National Economic Interests versus Global Governance Institutions" and "SWOT Analysis of the Russian Economy - Global Challenges and Opportunities up to 2020". Putin also offered the CIS heads of state to hold an informal meeting as part of the forum program.

RBC, 22.04.2008, Moscow 15:31:31.The Russian stock market could continue to consolidate for several days, experts told RBC TV. Later, driven by a weaker dollar and rising commodity markets, Russian stocks are likely to rise, particularly the oil sector. LUKoil and Tatneft remain investors' favorites among oil companies, performing better than the market. Gazprom is also said to start gaining ground soon.

   The USA: Pastor Phillip Miles!

Hundreds & Hundreds of new articles about Pastor Phillip Miles! Everyone jumping up & down about unfair Russian legal system. Where was everyone for the past two months? We have 10 articles about Pastor Miles and everyone acts like they just heard about it.
Wake Up America, Pastor Miles has been in jail for two months.

Hello,

Today I was drinking my coffee and thinking about Pastor Phillip Miles.

In the last few days Windows to Russia has been overwhelmed with thousands of Goggle hits.

The world has woke up that Phillip Miles is in trouble, very deep trouble!

I have stayed on this story because I was hoping that people in the USA would take it seriously. I have given as much information about Phillip Miles that I could give. I have received many comments (many unprintable) I printed all that did not call me every name in the book. Many of these were from Church organizations.

I am an American living in Russia! I know very well what can happen if you mess up. I hope that you all have learned what can happen if you mess up. American Mentality does not work in the rest of the world, you must have World Mentality to survive.

I have traced many views of Windows to Russia over the past few months to the, Department of State of the USA, Washington DC, South Carolina State Gov. and many other government organizations. Sad that they did not see to it that Miles was brought home.

I watched web links appear then block my IP as they realized that I was printing information. I saw that, as people in the USA running from the fact that Pastor Miles was in trouble. I saw Churches writing articles about what happened, but never saying to do anything but, Pray to God. I saw Miles cousin on a forum website try to help. He mysteriously got quiet! That was a mistake! (Everyone should have been screaming at the top of their lungs.) I see many people say things like he deserved it. I saw a lot of sad things over this situation..........

From the beginning all information pointed to Miles going to jail, people tell me they knew what was happening from the very beginning. Then why did they have lawyers using tactics such as American Mentality & non knowledge of the laws. Those tactics might work with Suzy Q and her first time to Russia, but Miles was a seasoned Traveler. Miles traveled during Soviet Era when times were much stricter.

You all have one more chance to try to scream loud enough! He has an appeal allowed to him. Maybe now it is time to put Political pressure on. Playing the silent game & praying did not work..... Time to put the pressure on!

I was taught,"God helps those who help themselves!"

I say, be glad that you are not in his shoes.

Russia: Pastor Phillip Miles, Gets Three Years!

Hello,

http://kylekeeton.com/2008/04/phillip-miles-what-will-be

Looks like Russian Courts did not believe Pastor Miles either. He has been coming to Russia since before the fall of the Soviet Empire!
---------------------------------------------------------------
A Russian court on Monday sentenced a U.S. pastor to three years in prison for illegally bringing hunting ammunition into the country.

Phillip Miles was arrested in a Moscow airport in February for smuggling in a box with 20 rounds of undeclared hunting ammunition in his luggage.

Miles said at the time it was a present for his friend, a pastor from the Urals city of Perm.

Moscow's Golovinsky district court ruled that the 52-year-old evangelist from Christ Community Church in Conway, South Carolina, will spend three years and two months in a prison camp.

South Carolina internet newspaper MyrtleBeachOnline said the ammunition was found by customs officials at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport in late January, when Miles was entering Russia.

Sheremetyevo airport: Pastor Phillip Miles was caught with bullets as he arrived

But the priest was allowed to continue his journey and was detained in Sheremetyevo on his way back from Perm.

Interfax news agency quoted Miles as saying he regretted violating Russian law, but he also called his sentence "severe".

The court rejected arguments by Miles, who has visited Russia more than once, that he was unaware of customs regulations for bringing in ammunition.

Defence lawyers said they will appeal against the sentence in Moscow city court.

Looks like what I said is true, there is more to this than meets the eye........

   Russian Vacation Was A Blast!

Hello,

We are back from Vacation. We have lots of beautiful pictures & interesting stories to tell.

The only bad thing about the trip was that Russia is, Easy Internet non existent once you leave Moscow. The only way to have had any consistent Internet would be to have used GPRS with a sim card for your laptop. Dmitri Minaev from De Rebus Antiquis Et Novis, told me about using GPRS but at that point we had invested in wireless for WiFi.

We did not get to all towns that we wanted to travel to but we did travel around 5000 km.

So in the next few days we will post some of the highlights of our trip with lots of beautiful pictures.

The Russian Roads were wonderful, the Russian Road Cops were nice, the Russian People were fantastic & Southern Russia was a delight!

Stay tuned for more......

Phillip Miles: What will be the Outcome?

Hello,

Phillip Miles has been in jail since he was arrested in Moscow on Feb. 3. In Russia, a person cannot possess ammunition without a permit.
--------------------------------------------------------------
MOSCOW: A U.S. pastor who admitted bringing hunting ammunition into Russia illegally did so only out of ignorance for Russian law, his lawyer argued Thursday.

Phillip Miles, 52, of South Carolina, has been jailed since his arrest on Feb. 3, five days after arriving in Russia carrying a box of rifle cartridges, which he said were a gift for a friend.

He has admitted bringing in the shells, but said he didn’t bother to check if Russian laws differed from U.S. laws.

Authorities say Miles could get slightly more than 3 years in prison if convicted for violating customs and firearms trafficking laws.

Vladimir Ryakhovsky, Miles’ lawyer, said customs officials at Moscow’s Sheremyetevo airport were partially at fault for not making it explicitly clear in English that travelers must declare ammunition, for sport or otherwise, when entering Russia.

He said Miles was an avid hunter and frequent visitor to Russia, where his supporters say he has done humanitarian work for years.

“My client is merely a victim of the American mentality … where it seems everything is possible everywhere in the world,” he told the Golovinsky District Court.

Miles, wearing a clerical collar, was brought to the courtroom in handcuffs and listened to proceedings from inside a courtroom cage, where defendants in Russian criminal courts are held during trial. He looked baffled at times as a translator struggled to keep up with testimony.

“I’m surviving. I’m OK,” he told reporters before the session began.

He again explained to the court that the shells were a gift for a friend and it did not occur to him to declare them to customs officials upon arriving in Russia on Jan. 29.

“I just didn’t realize it was against the law. I’m here just because of my ignorance,” he said. Judge Olga Drozdova, who at times joked with prosecutors and Ryakhovsky and glanced at her fingernails, appeared to sneer in response.

Closing arguments are set for Friday, after which a ruling is expected.
--------------------------------------------------------------

The case is to have a verdict on Monday, the 21st of April.......

Maybe his American mentality will get him of the hook? Do not forget that he has been traveling to Russia since before the Soviet Union times....... (my American mentality says no bullets in the first place)

   Russia: Vacation Post 1

Hello,

As we had our morning cup of delicious Ukraine Coffee & Tea, we got our internet connection going.

We are having a blast on our trip. We decided to go to the Crimea in Ukraine. The weather is wonderful and warm.

We stopped on the first leg of our trip, at a town in Russia called Prohorovskoe(Belgorodskaya oblast'). We stayed in a hotel that Putin stayed in when he was in this town. We found out that Yeltsin had all the major monuments put in this area. The town has fantastic sites to see and beautiful churches.

The pictures are of the monuments and the big church near the motel. The last picture is of the Motel. This town had lots of battle tanks from WWII. There was a major tank battle at this spot.

We are now in the Yalta Hotel as we do this on their Wi-Fi system which is marginal at best. We are on the top floor of the Hotel (16th, which seems to have the best connection) to post this article. Our room is on the 9th floor.

We are going to look around for a few days in the Yalta area. There is a major Church Holiday on Monday (7th). On Tuesday we will be traveling to Sochi to see the Olympic city before all the construction is done.

Hope all is going well with everyone & we will post again Monday. (We will try?)

Happy Trails,

Svet & Kyle
