Grows very quickly under ideal conditions. Trees bear fruits in great quantities. Small juicy fruit to 2″ around with brown velvet skin and sweet pulp, resembling small grape tomatoes in shape. The fruit is usually used in drinks, fresh, either as a flavoring for beverages, or in preserves. Fruits can be eaten out of hand!
Dovyalis
. Flacourtiaceae. shrubs or small trees, Leaves alternate, simple, pinnately veined, usually 3-nerved at the base, with a short petiole and small deciduous stipules. Male flowers many, clustered in the axils, with 4-7 hairy sepals, no petals, and numerous stamens and glands bourne on a fleshy disc; female flowers solitary or a few together, with 5-9 peristent hairy sepals and no petals; ovary 2-8-celled. Fruit an indehiscent berry. Africa, India, Sri Lanka.
Fruiting occurs from spring to late summer. In some areas tree will bear multiple crops throughout the year. Propagation by seed.
